the dream doesn't die when lennie kills curly's wife, it's when it crystalizes in george's head that lennie must die. the story is much more about george and his progression towards redemption (through lennie) which he ultimately fails at when he destroys lennie, than lennie's progression towards killing the wife. lennie throughout the story is one character, a consistent, innocent, brutal man. it is george who sees him any other way and whose eyes are opened towards the end.
